The Department of Business Management has developed a BCom Financial Planning programme, with majors in Financial Planning and Business Management. The Department of Education and other relevant governing bodies such as the Financial Planning Institute (FPI) have accredited the programme, which is designed to meet the needs of learners in the sector who require both management and specialist knowledge and skills. The successful completion of the BCom Financial Planning programme will lead to a professional designation, namely that of Financial Services Associate (FSA™), awarded by the FPI. This is the first step towards obtaining the prestigious CFP® designation.

WHAT IS FINANCIAL PLANNING?

Financial planning is the process of meeting your life goals (i.e. buying a home) through the proper management of your finances. The financial planning process consists of six steps that help you take a “big picture” look at where you are financially. Using these six steps, you can work out where you are now, what you may need in the future and what you must do to reach your goals. The process involves gathering relevant financial information, setting life goals, examining your current financial status and coming up with a strategy or plan for how you can meet your goals given your current situation and future plans.

WHAT IS A FINANCIAL PLANNER?

Financial Planning is an advice driven process whereby a financial planner assists a client to identify short, medium and long-term life and financial goals and then assists the client to advise a financial strategic plan to meet those goals. Financial planners assist clients firstly by building wealth and then preserving their wealth using strategies designed around the clients’ needs. The planner can look at all of your needs including budgeting and saving, taxes, investments, insurance and retirement planning. Or, the planner may work with you on a single financial issue but within the context of your overall situation.
