The 2022 cohort of Financial Planning students had the privilege of conversing with Financial Planning Alumni from the Department of Business Management who had also pursued the same career paths.

Anelisa Mti CFP®, a Retirement Specialist with Chartered Wealth Solutions, and Jon-Paul Raper CFP®, a Financial Planner and Business Owner, spoke on the topic of affordable investment opportunities for young people. They emphasized that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution and that every client or individual situation needs to be examined in isolation in order to provide a more tailored approach, but they also emphasized the importance of starting young to develop saving and budgeting habits. This enables the students to share and live through experiences, which facilitates conversation when they begin working with clients.

Sanelise Malangeni CFP®, a Training Consultant for Sanlam, talked about her journey from beginning as a young financial planner in training to currently instructing new financial planners on how to navigate the profession. She undoubtedly helped students recognise the variety of career routes they can follow after earning their degrees and helped them deal with some of the worries that come with starting a new job search after graduation in the present job market.

Nangamso Kave, a Business Owner, Financial Literacy Coach, Travel enthusiast, and Estate Officer at Standard Bank, also shared her experiences after graduating from university, offering the students more to consider on their options. She also discussed how she used the knowledge she had learned from her academic education to build her legacy and turn her love of real estate into a wealth-building plan. She emphasised the importance establishing a work-life balance outside of work is crucial for refocusing on the next page or even chapter.

We are grateful to our graduates for sustaining the excellence and ubuntu ideals of Nelson Mandela University and for raising their hands to express that they wish to contribute to the change they want to see in the financial planning industry.
