Megan began her studies in 2018 in the field of Medical Laboratory Sciences. However, she soon realised that a long-term career in health sciences wasn’t the right fit. After completing her first year, she took a break—originally planned as one year, which turned into three. During that time, she worked in her family’s business and discovered a real interest in how businesses operate. This hands-on experience sparked her decision to study Business Management.
Returning to university after time away brought challenges. Megan had to adjust back to academic life and relearn effective study habits. “Relearning how to study effectively and manage academic pressures took time and effort,” she shared. Building a routine, developing strong study habits, and seeking support when needed helped her find her rhythm again.
Managing her time was another key to her success. With a structured schedule and the help of calendars and to-do lists, she stayed on top of both academic and personal responsibilities. “Effective planning really is key,” she noted. This organisation allowed her to balance her studies, extracurricular commitments, and part-time work without feeling overwhelmed.
Megan believes that the most valuable skills she’s gained include strong time management, a good work ethic, and the ability to stay organised. These skills helped her stay focused and productive, and she sees them as important assets for her future career.
When motivation was low, Megan stayed on track by focusing on small, daily goals. “Breaking tasks down into mini milestones and checking them off as I go helps reduce stress and gives me a sense of accomplishment,” she explained. These small wins kept her motivated even during busy or stressful times.
To students aiming for academic success, Megan offers practical advice:
"Always keep your end goal in mind—it serves as a strong motivator during tough times. Break your larger goals into smaller, daily or weekly tasks and stay consistent in working toward them. Being organised, managing your time well, and staying committed to your routine will help you make the most of your university experience and set you up for success."
Now, Megan is completing her honours year as a full-time postgraduate student at Nelson Mandela University. Alongside her studies, she also works as a tutor for two modules, continuing to build her academic and professional experience.
Her story shows that finding the right path sometimes takes time, but with focus and effort, success is always possible.
