Sade de Villiers was named the top achiever in the BCom: General – Business Management (Extended) programme in 2025. Her success comes from a strong passion for business, hard work, and the ability to stay focused, even when times got tough.

Sade’s interest in business started at home. Both of her parents run their own businesses, which made her curious about how businesses work behind the scenes. In high school, she enjoyed Business Studies and knew she wanted to learn more. This led her to choose Business Management as her main area of study. She also added Economics as a second major to better understand how the economy affects businesses.

Her university journey wasn’t always easy. One of the biggest challenges she faced was studying online during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was hard to connect with classmates and lecturers, and staying motivated was difficult. “I had to be very disciplined with time management and relied heavily on recorded lectures and support from peers to stay on track,” she said.

On top of her studies, Sade also managed a part-time job, ran a small sustainable clothing business, and helped out at home. Planning ahead and avoiding procrastination helped her stay on top of everything. “Assignments and tests can creep up quickly, so I learned early on how important it is to get a head start,” she explained.

During her time at university, Sade gained important skills that will help her in the future. These include time management, working well under pressure, doing research, thinking strategically, and working with others. She believes these skills are useful in any job.

When things got stressful, Sade kept going by sticking to a routine and setting small goals. “I’ve come to realise that while motivation is helpful, it doesn’t always last. It's discipline that keeps you consistent,” she said. She also made sure to take breaks and do things she enjoyed, like walking or spending time with friends.

Her advice to other students is clear and encouraging:“Stay consistent, stay curious, and don’t wait until the last minute. Getting a head start on assignments makes a big difference, especially when things start piling up. Also, take advantage of the resources around you, such as your lecturers, fellow classmates, and campus support services are there to help. Most importantly, find a balance. Make time to enjoy the experience, build friendships, and get involved in things outside the lecture halls—it really shapes your confidence and personal growth.”

Now, Sade is working full-time as a Client Portfolio Analyst at FNB Sandton as part of their Graduate Programme. Her journey is proof that staying focused, working hard, and believing in yourself can lead to great things.
